In the summer of 1997, the Center for Multimedia at James Madison University worked in association
with the Institute of Technical and Scientific Communication to develop an on-line technical
writing course. Incorporating the World Wide Web, interactive software and collaborative activities,
the course explores the complexity and importance of writing software documentation. This semester,
the course is offered to on-campus students. Next semester, the course will be offered as a distance
education course to off-campus students.
This workshop session will focus on designing on-line courses and will address issues such as
assessment, technical support, and policy issues surrounding on-line teaching and learning.
