Creating 35mm Slides

To output your files to 35mm film, schedule an appointment with Craig Baugher, at x6046 or baughecc@jmu.edu. To ensure availability of the film recorder and CIT staff time, call at least five working days in advance of your use date for the final slides.

A PCR II Film Recorder is used for recording 35mm slide transparencies of your slideshow presentations or individual bitmap files, such as Photoshop images. Images can also be recorded onto black and white or color negative film for prints. After the files have been recorded, you will need to take the exposed film to a vendor for processing. Allow one working day for recording and one working day for film processing. Typically, film will be processed the same day if taken to the vendor before 9:30 a.m. Black and white film may take longer.

Film for color slides is kept on hand and will be charged to your department using your department’s budget code. Costs for developing a film roll for a 35mm slide presentation are: (Please note: This does not include the cost of processing the film into 35mm slides)

  • 24 slides: $10.00
  • 36 slides: $12.00
If you would like CIT to develop the film and take it to the vendor for processing, costs for this service are as follows:
  • 24 slides: $35.00
  • 36 slides: $40.00
Again, you must provide your departmental code in order for the CIT to provide this service.

Suggestions for trouble-free recording

  • In PowerPoint (and other presentation applications), make sure that "35mm" is chosen in "Page Setup." Choose this BEFORE creating the presentation.
  • Make sure that text is at least 1/2" from the edges of the page to ensure that text is not cropped by the slide mount.
  • Save bitmap files in PICT or TIFF format. Do not compress these files. The film recorder will not rasterize compressed PICTS, JPEGS, or compressed TIFFS (TIFFS saved with LZW compression). As a result, no image will appear on the film.
  • Create files in horizontal (landscape) format.
  • Scan at the recommended resolution. The film recorder is a high resolution postscript output device; the maximum output of the PCRII is 4,096 x 2,732 pixels. To ensure that your bitmap files look smooth and not "pixelated", scanning resolution should be set at around 250 dots per inch.
A good rule of thumb: your files should measure AT LEAST 1500 pixels wide. CIT staff can make recommendations for scanning resolution based on the dimensions of the original image.
