  1. Purpose of Acrobat: convert documents of any format to a “portable document format” (PDF) that can be viewed on any platform through the free Acrobat Reader©. In many cases, conversion to a PDF will reduce file size by the process of compression.

 

  1. Objective when creating documents:
    1. For Print: best quality
    2. For Web: acceptable quality and small file size

 

  1. Key Factor: Scanning and conversion settings (dpi, area to be scanned,
    image type). Graphics and color will always add significantly to file size.

 

  1. This document includes instructions for converting:

 

    1. Word documents
    2. Scanned documents

 

 

Converting Word Documents to PDF

 

We have a document that is 56 kilobytes. We can convert it to PDF and reduce the file to 0 kilobytes.

 

Step 1: Open a document

 

 

 

 

 

 

Step 2: Select File—Print

 

 

 

Step 3:  Select “Acrobat PDF Writer” from the Printer options

 

 

Step 4: Check “Print to File”

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


Step 5: Name the printer file

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


Step 6: Open Acrobat and open the file

 

 

 


Converting a Scanned Document to PDF

 

Step 1: Open Acrobat. Select File—Import—Scan

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


Step 2:  Set scanning options and click the Scan button.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


Step 3: Assess the results. When this document is cropped and saved, it is 114KB (as compared to 1.15MB—about 1/10 of the size).
