Exploring Instructional Uses of Social Bookmarking

Presented by Britt Watwood, Faculty Center for Teaching Excellence, VCU
Jeffrey Nugent

Social bookmarking has emerged as a web-based practice for finding, storing and sharing bookmarks on the web. Gone are the days of needing to rely on bookmarks stored locally within a web browser on each computer. Through the process of using keywords or “tags,” users can build collections of web resources that can be searched for and shared with other users, opening up new opportunities for web-based collaboration. This session will introduce participants to potentially valuable instructional uses of a social bookmarking tool called del.icio.us (http://del.icio.us). While one use is to simply have access to one’s own bookmarks from any computer (office, home, laptop), the real power of del.icio.us lies in the collaborative and open sharing of weblinks, as well as the building of a social network. After a brief introduction of the tool and the concept of tagging, the presenters will share experiences of using the del.icio.us to promote research, collaboration and discovery learning in a graduate level teacher education course. Lessons learned, suggestions for best practice and ideas for use in other educational contexts will also be discussed.
