Practicing Faculty Development Community: Showcase of an Online Course

Presented by Christie Liu, PhD, Instructional Technologist/Faculty, JMU Sharlene Thompson, PhD, Assistant Professor in Communication Department James Madison University

Situated in a faculty development community, this presentation will discuss the success of an online course as well as its design and development process. The practices of faculty community have been proposed in the literature for successful innovation in teaching with technologies (Garofoli & Woodell, 2003; Howell, Saba, Lindsay, & William, 2004; Hagner & Schneebeck, 2001). The community model in this presentation consists of faculty teaching online courses, personnel of instructional support and technology training, and coordination of distance education. Different parties in the community were connected through the Center for Instructional Technology (CIT). In the model, faculty having an interest in teaching with technologies engaged in conversations in real-world practice at CIT. Through the conversations, the faculty detected the effective ways of technology integration in their teaching and became aware of the related preparation and planning for online teaching. At the same time, “to-the-point” support from technology training, instructional support, and distance education accommodated faculty with varied levels of technology experiences and needs. In this presentation, we will discuss how “just-in-time” course review, in-class observation, and the practice of faculty development community provided an ongoing formative evaluation for the success of an online course.
