High Five!

Excellence in Teaching with Technology - Sean McCarthy

Congratulations to Dr. Sean McCarthy on receiving the Excellence in Teaching and Learning with Technology Award at the TLT Conference on October 20th! CIT uses this award as a way to recognize teachers who have proven themselves as leaders in teaching with technologies at JMU.

Dr. Sean McCarthy is an Assistant Professor in the Writing, Rhetoric, and Technical Communication department. Sean also serves as a Faculty Associate with CIT. He was nominated for this award by WRTC Interim Director Traci Zimmerman, as well as Susan Ghiaciuc and Cathryn Malloy, both associate professors in WRTC. They nominated Sean because of his enthusiasm for incorporating technology in the classroom and his development of “the magazine project” to help WRTC 103 students learn how to write for a real audience. Dr. Zimmerman recommended Dr. McCarthy for this award saying, "He is an asset to our university community and an ambassador for how technology can be used to inspire educated, enlightened and engaged citizenship.” Students in Sean’s classes acquire technology skills that have allowed them to land jobs and internships with media savvy companies.

During the Spring 2014 semester, Sean coordinated a collaboration between his Writing for Nonprofits class as well as several other classes and a local nonprofit, the Collins Center. He and his students offered recommendations to completely rebrand the organization, including their website, using digital tools. His use of technology in the classroom has allowed for students to have the opportunity to experience the difficult “messiness” that digital tools and collaboration entail. He has also helped his colleagues discover the benefits of teaching with technology and he has repeatedly helped his colleagues incorporate technology into their pedagogical approaches. Sean continues to create positive experiences for both students and faculty with using technology in the classroom.
