Faculty mentorship is an integral component in our Institutes for Online/Blended Course Development. This experience will apply the knowledge and skills that are gained in the Institutes for Online/Blended Course Development into a practical context and enhance the effectiveness of teaching with technologies.
Each faculty member participating in the institutes is paired with a mentor, who is a JMU faculty colleague. A mentor is selected based on his/her online teaching experience in an online format and their knowledge about JMU’s culture on pedagogies and the use of technologies. Faculty mentors will:
- Consult with an Online/Blended Institute participant on the design, development and teaching of their online/blended course(s).
- Share their experiences and lessons they learned related to effective online/blended teaching and learning.
- Review the course development and delivery process for compliance with sound online/blended teaching practices.
- Act as a sounding board and resource for pre- and post-development questions.
- Build a faculty development community with the our staff.
Mentoring Format and Process:
Each Faculty Mentor will spend a total of 6 hours with a faculty member participating in an Online/Blended Course Development Institute to consult on course design and development and the use of effective instructional and assessment techniques and strategies. We greatly appreciate the support and participation of the mentor and will provide a stipend of $300 per mentee. Depending on the institute structure, most of the mentoring hours could be within one week (eg. Summer Institute) or be distributed over an entire semester.
Schedule and Timeline:
1 hour initial consultation on the course project. Questions to be covered include: What are the learning goals of the course? What are the course objectives that can lead to these learning goals? What types of technologies are appropriate to use based on the course objectives and content? What are effective ways to implement technologies? What are appropriate teaching, learning and assessment strategies?
4 hours to provide formative evaluation, peer review and consultation. This includes course review, evaluation of the status and progress of course development, Q&A, constructive feedback, and discussion about teaching, learning and assessment challenges in an online course.
1 hour reflection with the institute participant after the course has been developed. Ideally this would be in conjunction with the institutes when the participant presents the course they will teach or have already taught.
After completing the mentoring experience, both the mentor and mentee faculty members will provide feedback about the experience through a survey, report or presentation at an event. This feedback will be used to assess and adjust measures to modify our training and professional development services.
