Student Orientation

Success in online and blended learning is based on designing and developing quality online courses, as well as preparing students. Since technology allows students to acquire and create knowledge in online or blended learning environment it is important to provide students with strategies to be successful online learners and orient them to the tools and technologies they need in an online environment. The CIT recommends that departments and faculty provide a student orientation that includes the following topics:

  1. Best practice and tips for successful online learning
  2. Introduction to technologies used in the course or program, which may include Blackboard, Elluminate, blogs, etc.
  3. JMU Library resources
  4. JMU computing information and resources
  5. Laptop setup
  6. Other university resources and student support services

The Center for Instructional Technology (CIT) provides student orientations in collaboration with JMU Libraries and the IT training department. The orientations can be customized and adapted according to program or department needs. They may be delivered face-to-face, online asynchronously or synchronously with Blackboard Collaborate, or in a blended format, which includes face-to-face and online sessions.

Please contact the CIT for more information or if you are interested in developing a student orientation.
